Bobby McFerrin We Love You Concert & Community CircleSong – Sept 1

Bobby McFerrin Tribute Concert:

Giving All Our Love to Bobby . . . a night of dedication, singing and joy for the creator of CircleSongs.

Come sing with us! Witness and be a part of the improvised creation of a lush harmonic soundscape with all the power and beauty of VOICE.

Ten time Grammy award winner and (as he says) the guy who wrote Don’t Worry Be Happy, Bobby McFerrin is the inspiration behind this special gathering of love and admiration. As one of Marie Black’s most influential teachers, he created the CircleSong form that she’s been sharing with Portland since 2012.

Marie was a singerĀ andĀ helper for McFerrin at his first 24-hour public New Year’s Eve CircleSong entitled, A Chant for World Peace. As he gave her parts, she passed them to the audience, which grew to be around 2500 by midnight.

Join us this month as Marie Black and an array of singers create a lush tapestry of sound.

Audience participation will be encouraged during this special Festival of the Unknown Bobby McFerrin We Love You Concert & Community CircleSong. Simply take in the sounds or sing along!

What is Circle Singing?

The conductor creates a CircleSong by riffing or improvising, or simply put, pulling parts out of the air. Then the conductor choses a section of singers and passes the part to them. After a few parts are layered, a lush and soothing, or perhaps exciting, layered choral soundscape is the result. Anything can happen!

Festival of the Unknown is a monthly experimental music showcase featuring mind-expanding artists with legendary skills. It also houses Holistic Voice Lab’s student showcases and provides an incubator for their talents.

Audience participation is encouraged but not required!

Marie is known for leading the audience into unique and exciting soundscapes similar to a Cirque du Soleil of musical improvisation.

Come be part of the fun!
